Indonesia Indonesian Indoor & Outdoor Furniture Indonesia has a rich tradition in woodcarving. Handcrafted furniture produced by the country has gained worldwide recognition for its exquisite craftsmanship and innovative design. Aside from intricate weaving and woodcarving skills, other factors that have enabled Indonesia to become one the top five exporters globally of wooden furniture are low minimum order requirements, acceptance of mixed orders and abundant supply of wood and other natural materials.

Despite promising market conditions, suppliers are cautious as various challenges threaten to eat into their market share. A major problems is the rising cost of lumber and transportation. The cost of teak and mahogany went up between 10 and 20 percent in 2007. Furthermore, the rise in petroleum prices has contributed to the price increase of foam, paint and finishes. In addition, the cost of steel, aluminum, and metal fittings are on an upward trend.

As costs of raw materials rise, suppliers are forced to increase export prices. However, due to the competitive pressure, price adjustments are likely to be minimal. Instead, many suppliers are exploring the use of other types of wood. Some companies have turned to engineered wood such as MDF and HDF, which are less expensive and more environment-friendly, while others are using wood from fruit-bearing trees (e.g. mango and durian), and from fast-growing trees such as suar, white teak, eucalyptus and nyatoh. Although these types of wood are of lower quality, furniture manufacturers compensate with better design and production techniques.
