China's furniture industry has made a remarkable progress. In 2005, the furniture output was 339.9 million pieces, rising 11.41% compared to 2004. The total furniture production value reached RMB 138.904 billion, up by 27.40%. In 2006, the furniture industry continued to enjoy good growth in production, sales, and profits. In the first quarter of 2006, the production value of the Chinese furniture manufacturing industry amounted to RMB 37.992 billion, up by 31.78% over the 1Q 2005. Profits reached RMB 2.329 billion, up by 25.15%.

The international competitiveness of China's furniture industry also improved dramatically. China has now become a powerful export nation for solid wood furniture. In 2005, furniture exports reached USD 13.767 billion, a year-on-year growth of 32.98%. China is now the largest furniture exporter and well ahead of Italy. In 2006, the furniture industry continued to advance at a high growth rate. Exports amounted to USD 4.042 billion in the first quarter of 2006, rising 29.31% over the same period of 2005. Almost 60% was solid wood furniture.

In an effort to assist rural areas, the Chinese government is accelerating the pace of urbanization. This will stimulate housing construction and consumer expenditures for furniture. Each year, about 1.2 billion square meters if land is being developped - which is 6 times as much as in Europe. Urban housing construction accounts for 500 million square meters, providing 5 million families with houses. All those families have a need to furnish their homes.

After the reform and opening-up policy, four furniture industry regions gradually came into being. They are: South China region centered in Guangdong and Fujian; East China centered in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai; North China centered in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Shandong; and Northeast furniture region centered in Shenyang and Dalian.

Although the Chinese furniture industry is getting more concentrated, the industrial concentration is still low and no enterprise has a market share above 1% until now. Medium-small furniture enterprises still account for the majority but small enterprises with poor management and weak competitiveness will be eliminated eventually.

Driven by the market demand, China's furniture industry will attract more and more investment capital and this upsurge will likely last several years.
