member country. For every country are presented the general trends of the
economy, the segmentation of the market, the structure of the distribution,

the households’ expenses. Furthermore, this report determines future trends
in marketing, in distribution and in consumption.

The production of furniture and the distribution of furniture are two different fields. Even if some manufacturers either have their own distribution network or directly sell to the consumers, the large majority of them sell their products to retailers (specialised in furniture or not) who reach the final consumers. Retailing has a very simple definition : all sales to the ultimate consumer. But in the furniture sector, distribution is extremely complex, involving a wide variety of retail outlets selling furniture.
In Germany, the furniture market is 32 billion Euro at retail prices. It is the leading EU country both as consumer, producer and as organised distribution power. There are a total of 15,174 stores employing 110,000 persons : 8 persons per outlet on average compared with 3 persons in other EU countries. In the recent years, the size of the German furniture show rooms has increased by 20% to reach a total of 21 million m². The buying groups (Einkaufsverbände) and their affiliates have a big influence on the furniture market (60% of sales). 20 buying groups and chains control half of the market.
The country with the most furniture stores is Italy with more than 22,000 outlets. The total number of employees in the outlets is 67,000 person. The total selling area is 7,958,000 m² or 362 m² per outlet, one of the lowest in the EU. The retail market value is estimated at 11.3 billion Euro.
In France furniture is traded by a total of 11,700 outlets, specialised in furniture selling or not. The total selling surface of the outlets is 7,700,000 m². A third of all total sales (11.2 billion Euro) are claimed by one of the top five brands. Franchising is widespread in France.
In the UK, the main characteristic of furniture retailing is the importance of non-specialised channels (35% of the market). In this area, department stores and DIY play a leading role. Independent furniture retailers (35% of market) tend to be specialised.
The Spanish market hosts about 13,500 selling outlets, 80% of which are smaller than 250 m². The average furniture show room in Spain is 350 m², the smallest in the EU and showing the important fragmentation of the sector. Slightly less than 80% of furniture sales on the Spanish market are made through specialised furniture retailers.
