This study examines the US market for electric lamps, including filament lamps (i.e., incandescent and halogen) and electrical discharge lamps (i.e., fluorescent, high intensity discharge and other). Demand for lamps is provided by both product and end use, which encompasses
buildings (residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and other), motor vehicles, consumer products, streetlighting and related, and
equipment and other markets. In addition, major manufacturers of lamps are identified and profiled, and the key industry competitive variables
are discussed. The entire report is framed within the lamp industry’s economic, technological and market environments.
The study also discusses alternative lighting technologies that compete with lamps, including light emitting diodes (LEDs). While the study encompasses all types of electric lamps, the study does not cover lighting fixtures, lamp ballasts,wiring devices, dimming controls and related products. The study also does not include electric power generating, transmission and distribution equipment.
Historical data for 1996, 2001 and 2006 and forecasts to 2011 and 2016 are provided in current dollars and units for lamp demand; current
dollars for shipments; and current dollars and units for lamp demand by market. The term “demand” -- used interchangeably with “market,”
“sales” and “consumption” -- is defined as all shipments from US plants, plus imports, minus exports. Throughout the study, decorative holiday
lighting is included in aggregate dollar totals but not in unit totals because of incompatible units of measurement. Some of the components
in the tables may not add to the totals because of rounding.
