The study shows that the market continued to grow, reaching sales of £240m in 2001,compared to £232m in 2000. However, growth has slowed significantly and static sales are forecast for 2003-2004, indicating a declining share of the market.For UK manufacturers it was an abysmal year, with imports increasing and taking a growing share of the market. Ducal remains the largest company by a long way, but is now part of Silentnight and has also suffered poor results. Several important firms have gone into liquidation. Cheap imports will continue to threaten UK firms, but pine furniture seems to have reached its peak.
