This study examines the US market for advanced lighting products, including light emitting diodes (LEDs), high intensity discharge lamps (HIDs), specialty fluorescent lamps, and electroluminescent and chemical luminescent lighting systems. Excluded from the study are
traditional lamps such as filament lamps (i.e., incandescent and halogen). Demand for advanced lighting products is provided by both product and end use, which encompasses buildings, motor vehicles, signage, outdoor lighting, consumer electronics, and other markets.
In addition, major manufacturers are identified and profiled, and the key industry competitive variables are discussed. The entire report is framed within the lighting industry’s economic, technological and market environments. While the study encompasses some types of lighting, the study does not cover lighting fixtures, lamp ballasts, wiring devices, dimming controls and related products. Historical data for 1996, 2001 and 2006 and forecasts for 2011 and 2016 for manufacturers’ shipments, demand, imports and exports are provided in current dollar terms.
The terms “demand” and “sales” as used in this study are equivalent to US production of advanced lighting equipment plus imports less exports. Throughout the study, demand is related to various indicators in the tables (e.g., households, gross domestic product). These ratios are used for comparative purposes and to facilitate further analysis, and are based on unrounded numbers. Details in the tables may not add to the totals due to rounding.
